Warm, characterful interiors paired with a playful après-ski escape

Set in the heart of Surbiton, The Victoria has been thoughtfully reimagined as a warm and characterful neighbourhood pub, balancing traditional British pub heritage with a playful, experiential design approach. The scheme centres around creating a welcoming social environment with layered interiors that feel relaxed, atmospheric, and authentically lived-in, appealing equally to locals, families, and destination visitors.

Internally, the design retains the charm and familiarity of a classic pub setting while elevating the overall experience through texture, zoning, and carefully curated detailing. Cosy fireplaces anchor the main spaces, creating intimate focal points throughout the venue, while a mix of upholstered seating, timber finishes, and ambient lighting introduces warmth and depth. Bookable nooks and quieter corners have been carefully integrated into the layout to encourage longer dwell times and create a more versatile customer journey, allowing the pub to transition effortlessly from daytime dining to lively evening trade.

The material palette combines rich timbers, heritage-inspired finishes, tactile fabrics, and layered decorative lighting to establish a relaxed yet considered aesthetic. The interiors embrace an eclectic, collected feel, with vintage-inspired accessories and subtle rustic detailing helping to reinforce the pub’s informal and inviting character. The overall atmosphere is intentionally laid back and sociable, designed to feel approachable while still delivering a strong sense of identity.

The standout feature of the project is the fully refurbished après-ski garden, transformed into a playful Alpine-inspired retreat that brings a real sense of escapism to the venue. Designed to feel immersive and fun, the garden is filled with a mix of seating areas scattered amongst vintage sleighs, rustic timber details, ski paraphernalia, and nostalgic decorative touches inspired by mountain lodges and winter resorts.

A variety of seating styles helps create different social moments across the space, from larger group areas to more intimate corners, while warm festoon lighting and layered textures keep the garden feeling cosy and atmospheric throughout the year. The result is a vibrant outdoor destination with a strong personality — somewhere that feels equally suited to relaxed afternoons, winter drinks, and lively evenings with friends.
