Classic pub character reimagined with a touch of luxury

For generations, The Crown Tavern has been at the heart of Lee’s bustling community, welcoming locals and loyal patrons from across South-East London. Known for its craft beers, cask ales, extensive wine list and a traditional menu celebrating the very best of British produce, it’s a pub with something for everyone — all served with a warm, friendly welcome.

The Brief

The design challenge was to restore a true London pub character to the main trade areas, which had become tired and lacked the cosy charm guests expect. The vision called for a dramatic transformation with a traditional palette of finishes: rich dark timbers, deep leathers, plush fabrics, and warm brass details, all brought together under a softer, flexible scheme of dimmable lighting to create atmosphere at any time of day.

Beyond the bar and seating area lay a large dual-height dining space which, with its hard finishes and canteen-like feel, was underused and uninspiring. The ambition here was to reimagine the space as an inviting orangery-style garden room. Abundant planting, textured and patterned materials, and a varied mix of lighting would soften the volume, while a carefully balanced mix of dining-height and poseur tables would add visual interest and support a lively setting for both eating and drinking.

From striking bar to intimate booths — every corner tells a story of comfort and charm.

The Design

Guests are welcomed by a striking bar servery that anchors the space and seamlessly connects the bar with the lounge beyond. Richly stained dark timbers and polished brass detailing bring back a traditional pub character, while illuminated back-bar displays showcase wines and champagne with style. A classic black-and-white Victorian-inspired floor tile frames the bar, complemented by prismatic glass pendants that cast a warm, inviting glow.

In front of the bar, seating areas have been reimagined as luxurious pockets of comfort. A mix of furniture heights and styles, upholstered in heritage leathers and patterned fabrics, create a zoned, layered look that feels both welcoming and refined. Dark timber and green marble tabletops add a subtle note of luxury.

Opposite the bar, intimate window booths provide cosy retreats for smaller groups. Heavy drape-style curtains soften the space and add privacy, contrasting beautifully with the characterful exposed brickwork that lines this area.
