Bold features & Comfortable finishes

The Black Bull is located prominently on Morpeth High Street and is a popular establishment for locals.

The Brief

Black Rose Pubs tasked Fusion By Design to update the interior of this North East pub. The challenge was to retain much of its traditional atmosphere while introducing a bold new scheme to attract a wider variety of patrons for all-day dining and cocktails. The brief called for statement features combined with comfortable finishes to create a space that feels both inviting and exciting.

The existing interior of The Black Bull was tired and underused, particularly towards the rear. The design aimed to create a strong link from the entrance through to the back of the venue, encouraging guests to explore the full space and make better use of the seating throughout.

The Design

To make a striking first impression, the main façade was fully rendered to signal change, complemented by new signage and a brightly tiled entrance lobby designed to catch the eye of passers-by on the busy street.

The rear beer garden was also completely overhauled, transforming it into a rare gem in Morpeth. A new covered pergola with electric heaters allows year-round alfresco dining, while wall planting softens the space and continues the botanical theme from inside. New lighting was installed to create a warm, atmospheric setting for evening drinks.

Inside, a dramatic large-scale floral wallpaper greets guests as they enter, supported by botanical fabrics and greenery throughout. A palette of deep greens and jewel tones adds richness, layered against oak timber and traditional leather furnishings to maintain the pub’s heritage feel.

The bar has been refreshed with a new countertop, brass-detailed glass racks and a striking oak and brass back bar, complete with a neon sign for that perfect Instagram moment.

The dining area has been reconfigured for comfort and flow, each zone defined with bold wallpapers, metallic accents and warm rust tones. Artwork throughout celebrates Morpeth’s heritage, drawing on the town’s historic trade guilds for inspiration.
