The Brief
The much-loved Deansgate site in Manchester was chosen as the first in the UK to debut the brand-new Slug & Lettuce flagship design. The vision was clear: to completely reimagine the Grade II listed building and transform it into a must-visit high street destination, appealing to a broader, more diverse audience.
Over time, elements of the Slug & Lettuce aesthetic had been widely imitated, creating a “sea of sameness” across competitors. To reclaim its edge, the brand embarked on a bold new direction. Working closely with Stonegate and their brand consultants, a fresh design concept was approved—ready to set a new benchmark for the future of the brand.
The transformation was to be uncompromising, with every detail considered. From dramatic bar and back-bar displays to stylish booth seating, bespoke lighting, and standout fixtures, the Deansgate site was to embody a new chapter for Slug & Lettuce. The goal: to deliver a vibrant, instantly recognisable space, perfect for all occasions and designed to provide the ultimate backdrop for those all-important social media moments.
The Design
The new interior is a carefully curated blend of materials, bespoke joinery, striking finishes, and statement lighting—brought together to create a vibrant, modern space inspired by the glamour of art deco cocktail bars.
At the heart of the venue sits the dramatic bar servery, taking centre stage with illuminated arched display cabinets, reeded panelling finished in gold, and an eye-catching mural graphic. This bold focal point is both a showcase and a stage for the team to craft the brand’s signature cocktails.
Surrounding the bar, customers can enjoy a variety of seating experiences. Bespoke framed booths with pendant lighting and lush green foliage provide intimate settings, while bold wallpapers paired with sumptuous fabrics in pink, teal, gold, and deep blue introduce richness, pattern, and texture throughout.
Standout features such as a dedicated cocktail masterclass bar, a dynamic AV-controlled lighting scheme, bespoke artwork, and newly reimagined customer washrooms complete the transformation. Together, these details deliver an exciting, memorable atmosphere that embodies the new Slug & Lettuce design—an irresistible destination for every occasion.
